New Delhi : The government has decided against continuing the security cover provided to the former Indian Army chief, Gen. V.K. Singh as he is not perceived to be under any threat, an official said Wednesday.
“The army chief had been granted security cover for six months from his date of retirement till Nov 30. On Oct 4, there was a meeting in the home ministry where it was decided that this would not be extended as he was not perceived to be under any threat,” the official told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Gen V.K. Singh, who retired May 31, had been provided ‘Z-plus’ category security.
He has been staying in government accommodation after his retirement.
Gen Singh had Sunday joined people protesting against the gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus in the capital. He was named in a first information report by the police after clashes with protestors.
Gen Singh’s move to approach the Supreme Court against the government on the issue of his date of birth in the last few months of his tenure had triggered a public debate.
Gen Singh had shared the stage with social activist Anna Hazare in October and called for dissolution of parliament, saying that the existing governmental system had disregarded the soul and spirit of the Constitution.
He had also taken part in a protest by farmers.
