New Delhi : The Justice Verma committee, formed by the government to look into amendments for enhanced punishment in sexual offences of extreme nature against women, held its first meeting here Wednesday and said it has received 6,100 e-mails containing suggestions.
A press release issued after the meeting said the committee had requested suggestions from heads of the judiciary, members of the media, statesmen, public figures, academicians and human rights organisations in India and abroad.
It said “6,100 e-mails containing suggestions have already been received by the committee as on Dec 26, 2012”.
The committee was formed Dec 23 following public outrage over the brutal rape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in south Delhi Dec 16 night.
It would take suggestions till Jan 5, 2013, and the identities of the people who write in would be kept confidential.
Suggestions can be e-mailed to the committee at [email protected] or faxed to 011-23092675.
The committee comprises former chief justice of India Justice (retd.) J.S. Verma, former chief justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court Justice (retd.) Leila Seth and former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam.
The committee will submit its report in 30 days.
