Poll panel to visit Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya

Agartala: Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath will visit the coming weekend Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya where elections are due, officials said Monday.

The Election Commission team will review the preparations in the three states.

The team is expected to reach Agartala Saturday. The next day, it would go to Nagaland. It will be in Meghalaya Jan 7, an official told IANS.

Assembly elections are due to be held in February in the three northeastern states.

The assemblies in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland have 60 seats each. Their terms expire March 10, March 16 and March 26 respectively.

Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Ashutosh Jindal told reporters that the training of returning officers, checking of electronic voting machines and other steps would be taken.

According to the draft electoral lists published Sep 20, the total number of voters in Tripura was 2,277,415 including 1,114,100 women.

The CEO said over 120,300 people, including 80,000 fresh voters, have applied to be included in the electoral rolls.
