Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, spokesperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on international affairs, Friday thanked visiting India’s Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai for intervention to solve the ongoing political deadlock where former president Nasheed has demanded an early election and his successor has refused.

“The MDP appreciates the best efforts of Mathai to contribute to find a solution to the ongoing political crisis in the Maldives,” Xinhua quoted Ghafoor as saying.

The party which vowed to oust the new government with protests and street fights alleged that President Mohammed Waheed’s government did not respect the negotiation brokered by India’s foreign secretary.
