Protests against exploding dog population in Srinagar

Srinagar : Civil society activists Saturday staged a protest here against the growing dog menace in Srinagar where the canine population is reported to be over 100,000.

The situation has assumed an alarming proportion — and incidents of dog bites are increasing rapidly.

The activists poured to the streets here carrying interesting placards: “Dogs are out to kill us. Dog lovers, what should we do?” and “Save dogs, kill humans”.

Today’s protests were organized by the Valley Citizens Council, a voluntary organization.

Last month, a boy belonging to Hawal was admitted to a hospital with over a dozen dog bites.

The menace is has spread to other towns of the Kashmir Valley.

Activists said there has been an 80 percent increase in dog bite cases in the city.

The state high court is hearing a PIL on the issue.

A proposal had been mooted to construct dog pounds on the city’s outskirts.

Governor N.N. Vohra recently asked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to remove all the dogs from the Dachigam National Park.
