Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Police will act as a facilitator for the rehabilitation of the released militants who want to shun violence, a senior police official said Saturday.
Speaking at an interactive session with 1,500 released militants here, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S.M. Sahai reiterated the state government’s commitment to rehabilitate released militants who have returned to the mainstream so that they can live a dignified life.
First of its kind in the Valley, the interactive session was held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) here. The released militants attending the session belonged to Srinagar, Ganderbal and Badgam districts of the Valley.
Sahai asked the participants to form NGOs at the district level as these can provide a platform for the released militants to coordinate with the state government and police. He assured full support to the released militants for their rehabilitation in the mainstream.
The speakers from the released militants said they are facing a stigma from the society as well as the administration. They complained that their relatives are not being given police clearance for passports and they face mental agony for being summoned regularly to the police stations.
The IGP said the state government has relaxed the passport verification provisions for the relatives of the released militants and now the relatives of the released militants will be cleared by the police.
However, keeping in view the high volume of such cases that have come up after the relaxation, the passport verifications will be completed in due course of time.
He also assured the released militants that their attendance at the police stations would be curtailed to a minimum.
