Ajmer: An Ajmer court on Monday admitted a case against writers who exhibited and read from the banned The Satanic Verses of controversial writer Salman Rushdie at the Jaipur Literature Festival in Friday evening session. The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate will hear the case on 25th January 2012.
Noted social activist of Ajmer, Muzaffar Bharti who is also Media –Incharge of Muslim Ekta Manch, an umbrella body of Muslim panchayat heads of the district, has filed the case in his individual capacity.
Talking to TCN over phone from the court premises after filing the case, Bharti said he has filed the case against the four writers who read from the banned book and also against Salman Rushdie for writing the controversial book. The book was banned in 1988 yet, the four writers namely Hari Kunzru, Amitava Kumar, Jeet Thayil and Ruchir Joshi exhibited the book at the festival and read objectionable contents.
He said four noted writers had deliberately read from the banned book only to hurt the sentiments of Muslims and thus provoke them. As for Rushdie, the case against him is for dishonoring the Quran and the Prophet in his book.
The case has been field under different sections of the IPC including 153, 294(2), 297 and 120(b).
The Jaipur police has already filed a case against the four writers who read out portions from the controversial author’s banned book.
