“The epicenter was in the Hindukush mountain range,” meteorological office director Sonam Lotus told IANS.

Many in Srinagar felt the ground shook during the tremor.

“I rushed out of my house with the family. It was a quick jolt,” said Mustaq Ahmad, 42, of the old city.

Kashmir is situated in an earthquake-prone region.

On Oct 8, 2005, a major tremor measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale killed over 40,000 people across both Indian- and Pakistani-administered Kashmir with Muzaffarabad town bearing the major brunt.
