The development comes two days after another United Progressive Alliance (UPA) constituent, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar backed Ramdev on the issue.

“The use of black money in elections is a threat to democracy. We all know that black money is an evil. However, it’s not easy to get rid of it because the laws meant to tackle the issue has loopholes,” Ajit Singh told reporters here.

“The government is trying to get black money stashed abroad but it is tough dealing with foreign banks spread across several countries,” he added.

Praising Ramdev for spreading awareness on the issue, Ajit Singh said if the common man wakes up, the issue will be resolved.

Vowing to meet political leaders as well as gram sabha (village council) representatives to build consensus on the issue, Ramdev said he had also sought a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

“In the week ahead, I will meet Leftist leaders and leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and UPA. After that I will meet gram sabha representatives for around a month,” said Ramdev. “I have also sought a meeting with the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already backed Ramdev’s movement against black money.
