The case was reported to the police Friday morning and within hours, the alleged attacker was arrested.

“It is really good that the police have acted so fast in this case. We want such swift action in all the cases,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said.

“The woman, a housewife, had lodged a complaint that she was raped inside a moving car late Thursday night. Acting on her complaint, we arrested the accused, Mumtaz Khan, who has confessed to have committed the crime,” said Azizul Mollick, a police officer.

The officer said the woman, a resident of Barrackpore town near the city, visited a relative at the SSKM Hospital. Later, she boarded the point-to-point taxi which Mumtaz Khan was driving. He later raped the woman in the taxi and also robbed her of Rs.3,000 and gold ornaments.
