‘Non-tariff barriers hampering India-Bangladesh trade’

By IANS,

Kolkata : Observing that non-tariff barriers (NTBs) and para-tariff barriers (PTBs) were hindering India-Bangladesh trade, a Bangladeshi diplomat Tuesday called for increased dialogue between the countries to solve the issues.

“Bilateral trade has been steadily growing but not as much as expected mainly because of the existence of NTBs and PTBs. From custom clearance to getting visa, traders from the both countries have been facing problems hampering the growth of trade,” said Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Abida Islam.

“There have been talks over visa issues but I think we need to engage ourselves more into dialogues to sort out the issues,” added Islam in an interactive programme organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) here.

She also said there was a need for both the countries to improve infrastructure which was a major impediment in the growth of trade.

“One of the major issues that is hampering bilateral trade is the poor infrastructure on both sides of the border. I hope both the countries will cast a glance on the issue and try to improve,” said Islam.
