Rio De Janeiro : The UN Conference on Sustainable Development opened here Wednesday with world leaders meeting to renew political commitment to tackle economic, social and environmental problems.
The three-day Earth Summit aims to review the progress made since the last UN sustainability meet, held also here 20 years ago, and act urgently in the wake of the global financial crisis.
A day ahead of the summit’s opening, member states announced agreement on a draft outcome document to be adopted by over 100 heads of state and government.
The document, result of months of intense negotiations, contains “a lot of action” and could generate positive global change, Sha Zukang, the secretary-general of the Rio+20 summit, said following the announcement.
