New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday granted four weeks parole to a convict undergoing life imprisonment for murder so that he could tie the knot with his beloved June 25.
A vacation bench of Justice H.L.Gokhale and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai granted four weeks parole to Sharma as his counsel pleaded that families of both the bride and bridegroom would face great embarrassment if he could not make it for the marriage ceremony June 25.
Sharma got engaged to Sonia April 14 while he was on a month-long parole from April 4 to May 4. Their wedding was scheduled May 20 but postponed after his application for extension of parole was rejected by Delhi government.
Thereafter, the marriage was rescheduled for June 25. Sharma then moved the Delhi High Court seeking parole which issued notice June 13 but listed the matter for hearing July 9.
Assailing the high court order, Sharma argued that it had failed to appreciate that absence of prospective groom on the day of wedding would cause “embarrassment for both the families”.
He further contended that it too was not considered by the high court that the “family members of the bride have already spent so much money for the marriage which unnecessarily puts financial burden on the poor parents.”
Sharma pleaded that he “deserves to be granted parole for a period of five weeks to soleminise his wedding.
Sharma was arrested on the charges of murder by Delhi Police May 15, 2004 and was convicted by the trial court and awarded a life term Nov 3, 2009. The high court upheld his conviction March 18, 2010 and this was again sustained by the apex court Nov 13, 2010.
