Tehran : Police in Iran have recovered a haul of over one ton of illicit drugs during an anti-narcotics operation in the country’s southeastern region, Fars news agency has reported.
The drive was carried out in Sistan and Baluchestan province.
The drug traffickers intended to transit the cargo from Saravan city to Khash city in Sistan and Baluchestan province and then transit it to several other destinations in the country, Xinhua quoted a senior police official as saying.
The cargo, comprising 1,100kg of opium and 40kg of heroin, had been placed skilfully in a truck, said Hamid Fahimirad, commander of Sistan and Baluchestan’s Law Enforcement Police.
In May, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said that Iran had intensified combat against drug lords and mafias.
