The agreement was reached at a meeting of the IIT Council convened in the capital to discuss the proposed common entrance test after opposition from some of the IITs. The meeting was attended by directors of all IITs.

“We have taken a unanimous decision to follow the formula suggested in Saturday’s meeting. IIT will get control of advance test,” said M. Anandkrishnan, chairman, board of governors, IIT-Kanpur.

As per the new formula, IIT will take top 20 percent scorers of all boards and then conduct the final exam.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal skipped the meeting in order to avoid any political interference in the decision, official sources said.

The new format will come into effect from 2013, if accepted by the ministry.
