“There seems (to be) a pattern in all incidents suggesting that an attempt is sought to be made to frighten the media into submission,” the apex body of electronic media professionals said in a statement.

The media, it said, has particularly come under attack “because it works in most sublime public interest”.

The statement came a day after lawyers attacked scores of journalists in a court complex in Bangalore, leaving several policemen and media persons injured.

“Journalists were badly beaten up allegedly by lawyers and goons when the former were discharging their professional duty,” BEA said.

“What was more shocking for BEA was the response of the Karnataka chief minister who reportedly justified the incident.”

Referring to several incidents, the BEA said that it was evident that powers-that-be have contempt for the media in particular and the freedom of expression and public interest in general.

BEA is the umbrella body of editors of national and regional TV news channels of India.
