New Delhi : The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Tuesday constituted a committee of senior faculty members to probe into the academic performance of an MBBS student who allegedly committed suicide as he was disturbed over his academic performance.
“AIIMS director R.C Deka has constituted a group of senior faculty to verify whether the result of late Anil Meena, MBBS student of AIIMS, had been prepared as per the prescribed rules. The group will scrutinize the entire record pertaining to his academic performance,” a statement from the premier health institute said.
“The findings will be submitted to the institute within a month,” it added.
Anil Meena, 22, from Baran district in Rajasthan, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room Sunday at AIIMS in south Delhi. While no suicide note was recovered, police officials said Meena was struggling to cope with the strict study pattern of the insitute.
Meena, a farmer’s son, had failed in the first year exam as well as the internal examination. After Meena’s death, undergraduate students raised a furore over the institute’s mentoring mechanism for young students.
Deka has once again appointed former University Grants Commission chief Sukhdev Thorat to probe into the alleged discrimination against the Meena, who belonged to reserved category.
“In view of the discontent expressed by the under graduate students with the mentoring mechanism in the Institute and also the complaint that the recommendations of the Thorat Committee have not been fully implemented, the director has appointed Sukhdev Thorat prepare a report on the implementation,” the institute said.
The three-member Thorat Committee, constituted by the Centre in 2007 to look into allegations of caste-based discrimination at the premier hospital in the country.
“The committee will examine the extent of implementation of the recommendations of the Thorat Committee, identify gaps and recommend measures to be implemented in a time bound manner,” the AIIMS faculty said.
“The committee will suggest further measures for the welfare and academic enhancement of under graduate students and particularly students from SC/ST/OBC categories,” it added.
