Chennai’s elevated rail system will be completed in 2013

New Delhi/Chennai : The Indian Railways will complete the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extension service – the elevated rail system here – this year and convert the near defunct 156-year-old south India’s first railway station at Royapuram into a terminal, Railway Minister Dinesh Tivedi said Wednesday.

Presenting the railway budget for 2012-13 Tivedi said the MRTS extension between Velachery and St.Thomas Mount would be completed in the next fiscal.

The MRTS currently connects Chennai Beach and Velachery.

Trivedi also said south India’s first railway station at Royapuram into a terminal so that it becomes another rail hub.

The Royapuram station was opened in 1856.
