Bengal assembly adjourned following Trinamool legislator’s death

Kolkata : The West Bengal legislative assembly was adjourned following the death of Trinamool Congress lawmaker Ajit Bhunia here early Monday morning.

Bhunia, 58, a senior leader of Trinamool Congress from Daspur in West Midnapore district died following cardiac arrest at a private hospital in the city.

Speaker of the House Biman Bandopadhyay adjourned the house to pay homage to the deceased legislator.

Survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, Bhunia had been keeping unwell since the last few months.

“He breathed his last at around six in the morning. His is a big loss to the party and the state,” housing minister Arup Biswas said.

His body was brought to the state assembly where members of the house, including Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee and leader of opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)’s Surya Kanta Mishra, paid their last respects.

“He was an important leader of the district. From the assembly, his body will be taken to our party office in Daspur. His final rites will be performed near his ancestral home at Narajole in Daspur block,” said Dinen Roy, district Trinamool Congress president.
