Male : The Maldives President Mohamed Waheed addressed his country’s parliament Monday amid street protests by opposition supporters, a media report said.
Former president Mohamed Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters were protesting against Waheed who assumed office last month.
Widespread turmoil between Jan 14 and Feb 8 in the country forced then president Mohamed Nasheed to resign. Waheed had then succeeded him.
MDP supporters pelted stones at a building smashing its windows, reported haveeru online.
In his first presidential address, President Waheed said that if an early election is required, he would do everything possible to bring together all political leaders to discuss constitutional amendments.
“This is the time for all of us to work together in one spirit, the time to bring political differences to the discussion table in order to formulate solutions”, said Waheed.
President Waheed gave details of the damages caused during the political unrest in the country Feb 8.
