Jakarta : An Indonesian anti-terror unit criticised for killing five suspected terrorists says its officers were forced to take them down after they resisted arrest.
The incident took place in Bali Sunday, police said.
“During the raids, the suspects resisted arrests and our officers were forced to take them down,” National Police spokesman Inspector General Saud Usman Nasution said.
Critics said the Densus 88 anti-terror unit had been too quick to kill the suspects, denying law enforcement and intelligence agencies a chance to interrogate them or bring them to court.
Saus said the suspects had been under surveillance for a month and had several potential targets for future robberies, including a money changer and a gold store.
He said one of the slain suspects was involved in a bank robbery in 2010.
“We will continue to investigate the case as several suspects of the robbery are still at large,” he said.
