Moscow : The remains of two bombers executed in Belarus should be returned to their families for proper burial, Amnesty International said in a statement.
“Despite publicly stating its intention to abolish the death penalty, the Belarusian government continues to issue death sentences and execute prisoners,” said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International deputy director for Europe and Central Asia.
“President Alexander Lukashenko should establish an immediate moratorium on the death penalty. The Belarusian authorities must also release the bodies to the families of the two men,” he said.
Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalyov were sentenced to death for carrying out a deadly subway bombing in 2011.
The bombing in the Minsk metro April 11, 2011, killed 15 people and injured more than 200.
Under Belarusian law, the remains of the two men are to be buried in secret graves.
Belarus is the only country in Europe that still uses capital punishment.
