Shimla : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary J.P. Nadda was Thursday declared elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Himachal Pradesh.
State assembly secretary Goverdhan Singh declared Nadda, a three time legislator from the state, elected after the expiry of time for withdrawal of nomination papers.
The Rajya Sabha seat, the election to which was due on March 30, is being vacated April 2 by Congress leader Viplove Thakur.
Nadda was the only candidate who filed nomination for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the hill state.
The opposition Congress, which has a strength of 23 in the 68-member assembly, had not contested the poll. The ruling BJP has 42 member and three independents also support it.
Nadda, who resigned as state forest minister in 2010 following his appointment as a party general secretary, is a legislator from Bilaspur.
