Agartala : The Tripura assembly Thursday witnessed unprecedented bedlam as the opposition Congress created a ruckus demanding a probe into the alleged “mass rape of two young tribal women”, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house thrice.
As soon as the house assembled for the day, the Congress and its ally Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) legislators led by opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath vociferously demanded a probe and stern action against perpetrators of the reported “mass rape of two tribal women”, aged between 25 and 28 years.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who also holds the home portfolio, told the agitated members that the report of the police inquiry into the incident, that took place at Manu Bazar village, 145 km south of here, was awaited and appropriate action would be taken against the culprits.
“Police have so far arrested five of the six accused. Detailed inquiry by senior police officials is on. The government will also take care of the victims, if any,” Sarkar told the house.
The Congress and INPT legislators disrupted the proceedings on the last day of the budget session of the Tripura assembly on the issue, forcing Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath to adjourn the house three times.
The opposition members, displaying placards, raised slogans demanding resignation of the home minister.
The ruckus continued for several hours forcing the speaker to ask the ministers of the concerned departments to lay their replies on different issues instead of verbal discussions.
The chief minister requested the aggrieved opposition legislators not to do politics on the sensitive issue.
A team of the Tripura women’s commission Thursday visited Manu Bazar village and talked to the “victims”, who are now being treated at a government hospital.
