Bamako (Mali) : At least 12 people died in the confrontation between Mali’s mutinous soldiers and the presidential guards, police said Friday.
A curfew has been imposed in several regions of the West African nation, Xinhua reported.
Mutinous soldiers Thursday seized power in Mali after storming the presidential palace and arresting some of the government ministers.
The National Committee for Redressment of Democracy and Restoration of the State (CNRDR) announced through Malian radio and television Thursday that they had toppled Mali’s President Amadou Toumani Toure.
The whereabouts of the president is unclear though military sources said he was safe and at a military camp. The mutineers blamed the government on inability in handling the Tuareg insurgency in northern Mali.
