Lucknow : The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court Tuesday asked the central government to respond to a petition seeking consultation with the Uttar Pradesh chief minister before appointing the next governor.
The directives were issued by the double judge bench of Justice Umanath Singh and Virendra Kumar Dixit on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer Ashok Pandey.
Giving the central government two weeks to respond, the high court fixed April 16 as the next day of hearing.
The petitioner contended that since the appointment of governor pertained to the state, the governor should only be appointed after due consultation with the chief minister.
The term of incumbent Uttar Pradesh Governor B.L. Joshi ends in April.
