Badruddin Ajmal to give Rs 2 Cr to Dhubri boat capsize victims

Mumbai: Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, Assam state president of Jamiat Ulama-e Hind, Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri, and president of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has announced a relief package of Rs 2 crore for the Dhubri boat capsize victim families. Over 100 people were feared dead in the incident on 30th April.

Maulana Ajmal rushed from Mumbai on hearing about the tragedy of the ferry mishap at Dubri in Assam on this past Monday. He was accompanied by 18 MLAs of his party AIUDF. They have been working to provide relief and rehabilitation to members of the bereaved families.

He has announced a relief package of Rs 2 crore to the victim families. As head of the Jamiat’s Assam unit he gave an assistance of Rs 10,000 to each family after visiting their homes on Friday.

He personally contacted Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi and requested them to give Rs 5 lakhs to each family of the deceased. The PM has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for each victim family.

At least 100 people are feared drowned when a ferry capsized in the Brahmaputra River in lower Assam’s Dhubri district on 30th April afternoon, following a cyclonic storm. The ferry, originating from Dhubri was going towards Hatsingimari when it capsized near Fakirganj. It is said 250-300 passengers were on the boat. However, many are said to have swam to safety.

Meanwhile, Jamiat has arranged a congregational Dua at Zohar Prayer on Sunday (6th May) at the site of the tragedy. Among those who will be present for the Dua are Mufti Saeed Ahmed Palanpuri, Sheikhul Hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband, Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama-e Hind, Maulana Tayyabur Rahman Barbhuyya, North-East India Amir-e-Shariat and president, of Nadwatut Tameer along with the 18 MLAs of AIUDF.

Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has urged the state and central governments to provide a better and safe means of transportation for the people living on both banks of the Brahmaputra River. He has suggested that government-maintained ferries should be arranged for the passengers in large numbers so that proper safety and security measures are in place. He also demanded maintenance of bridges on the river in Dhubri, Goalpara and Barpeta districts.
