Ahmedabad : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday praised the Gujarat government for bettering the lot of Dalits in the state.
NHRC chairman and former chief justice K.G. Balkrishnan said here that many of the Dalit and tribal related welfare schemes were doing “fairly well” in Gujarat.
Inaugurating a public hearing on atrocities against Dalits, he said the future of Dalits in Gujarat was good compared to many states as 70 percent of them were literate.
But Balakrishnan did voice concern about the discrimination Dalits faced “at the hands of some groups”.
A number of Dalits from across the state related at the meeting stories of how they have been humiliated.
