Islamabad : Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi, charged with treason for helping the US to kill Osama bin Laden, was Wednesday jailed for 30 years.
The sentence was announced by the political administration of Khyber Agency to which Afridi belongs, Xinhua reported.
He was found guilty under the Frontier Crimes Regulation for carrying out a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad in order to get the DNA samples of bin Laden.
Afridi was also fined 320,000 rupees (over $3,400). If he fails to pay the fine, he could face another three years in jail.
After the sentence, Afridi was shifted to a central jail in Peshawar.
US commandos stormed bin Laden’s hideout at Abbottabad near Rawalpindi May 2 last year, taking the US-Pakistan ties to a new low.
The doctor was arrested 20 days later while trying to escape to Afghanistan.
