Man tortured by cops loses fingers, panel issues notice

New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission Tuesday issued notice to Uttar Pradesh Police over allegedly torturing a man so much that two fingers each of his both hands had to be amputated.

According to a media report, Ashutosh Singh was tortured at Sahjanva police station in Gorakhpur district. He was later sent to jail in judicial custody and diagnosed with gangrene.

After his release on bail, Ashutosh Singh consulted doctors in Lucknow and Delhi. All India Institute of Medical Sciences experts had to amputate his four fingers to save his life, the report said.

According to doctors, his feet may also require amputation, the report added.

“The commission observed that the contents of the report, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim and directed the SSP (senior superintendent of police), Gorakhpur, to submit a report within four weeks,” said a statement.

“The commission has directed superintendent, district jail, Gorakhpur, to submit a copy of the admission register showing the health of the victim at the time of admission and discharge from jail, along with medical treatment given to him during judicial custody,” it said.
