Kolkata : Accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal of trying to divide people along communal lines and perpetrating atrocities on political opponents, the CPI-M Monday said the state has slipped into anarchy.
“The state is in flames. Our activist are being killed, tortured and their houses burnt. A state of anarchy prevails,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member and leader of opposition in the state assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra told reporters here.
Referring to the recent incident of police firing in Nadia district’s Tehatta, Mishra said the villagers were now planning not to organise community Jagaddhatri puja celebrations.
“The government has taken an opportunistic stand in Tehatta to get the support of a particular community. This is a dangerous stand. If you try to divide people on communal lines and side with fundamentalists of one community, then the fundamentalists in the other community will get oxygen,” he said.
Asked whether he felt that the government was appeasing minorities, Mishra said: “They should not think that the minorities are fools. If the chief minister feels she can hoodwink the minorities, she is wrong.”
“But what we are worried about is that she is trying to create a communal polarisation. This is has already given a boost to the Bharatiya Janata Party,” he said.
