New Delhi : The Congress-led UPA government will try to evolve consensus for a smooth winter session of parliament Nov 22-Dec 20, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said Tuesday, adding he had listed 35 bills in the 16 days available for business.
“The government will try to evolve as much consensus as possible on transacting business,” Nath told reporters adding that “We will see what is the maximum we can do in that short period”.
Nath, who met the chief whips of the various parties Tuesday to finalise the agenda, said there were conflicting demands made by them.
“This is a sign of a vibrant democracy,” he said.
The government has listed 35 bills, 25 for consideration and passing and 10 for introduction in the winter session which will have just 16 days for business, Nath said.
He said the list could be amended.
According to Nath, out of the 20 working days in the winter session, four-days would go to the private member’s bills.
He said it was unfortunate that the past few sessions could not function fully.
Out of the 20 working days in the monsoon session, 13 were lost to disruptions by the Bharatiya Janata Party over the coal block allocations.
“I hope this would be a constructive and fruitful session,” he said.
The minister said the government was making effort to bring the proposed food security bill and the land acquisition bill.
Among the bills to be taken up for consideration and passage are the Companies Bill, 2011, the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2011, the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008, the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011, and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2012.
Discussion and voting on supplementary demands for grants (general) for the year 2012-13 is also on the agenda, said Nath.
