Islamabad : The Pakistani foreign office Wednesday described as “incorrect and baseless” Indian media reports that a note from India about the execution of Ajmal Amir Kasab was not accepted by Pakistan.
India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad Gopal Baglay visited the foreign office here Tuesday with a note regarding Kasab’s execution, and Zehra Akbari, director general South Asia, in the foreign affairs ministry, acknowledged the receipt, it said.
Pakistan condemns terrorism and is willing to work closely with all countries to eliminate the scourge of terrorism, Foreign office spokesman Moazzam Ali Khan said.
Pakistan’s position on terrorism has been very clear and consistent, the Pakistan Radio quoted Khan as saying.
Earlier, a section of the Indian media reported that Pakistan had not acknowledged the receipt of the note from India regarding the hanging of Ajmal Kasab.
Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters Wednesday that “Pakistan refused to accept the letter informing them of Kasab’s hanging and they returned it. So we sent them a fax as well”.
“Pakistan has been informed but there is no demand for Kasab’s body”, he said.
Pakistani national Ajmal Amir Kasab, the sole surviving gunman of the Mumbai terror attack of Nov 26, 2008, was hanged in an Indian jail at 7.30 a.m. Wednesday, after his mercy plea was rejected by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee earlier this month.
Kasab was buried inside the premises of Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail shortly after the execution. He had been shifted from Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail to Pune two days ago.
Kasab’s end came five days before the fourth anniversary of the brutal terror attacks that claimed 166 lives and injured 300 people. Nine of his associates, who had sneaked into Mumbai for the three-day carnage, had been secretly buried in the city in January 2010.
