The money will be utilised in projects to increase grain yield in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Henan provinces by 30 percent from the 2009 levels.

About 1.2 million people will be benefited, China Daily reported Thursday.

Yaozhou Zhou, a water expert with ADB, said: “China’s future food security hangs on using scarce water resources more efficiently and making farming more productive.”

Irrigation and drainage systems will be improved in the targeted areas, which contribute more than 28 percent of the country’s total grain output.
