New Delhi : Fatal accidents have fallen by nearly 18 percent in Delhi compared to last year due to a crackdown on drunken driving and higher visibility of traffic policemen on roads, an official said Tuesday.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said fatal accidents and crashes plunged by 17.26 percent and deaths due to these accidents by 17.44 percent (till Nov 15) as compared to last year.
He was addressing a workshop on road safety organised by the World Health Organisation.
“We made sure that police personnel manned major intersections during peak hours to discourage people from breaking the law… The crackdown on drunken driving has contributed a great deal as well,” said Garg.
A total of 22,111 drunk drivers were prosecuted till Nov 15 as compared to 15,474 in the corresponding period last year – a rise of 50 percent.
