Vienna: German scientists are testing a vaccine which if successful could bring relief to thousands of kidney cancer patients.

The vaccine was conducted on 19 patients with renal cell carcinoma so advanced that other therapies were no longer effective, Xinhua reported Monday.

“Seven of these patients are still alive and have had their disease stabilized for up to 65 weeks,” Ingo Schmidt-Wolf, of the Centre for Integrated Oncology in Bonn, said.

Two of the patients experienced remission and eventually stabilization upon continued administration of the vaccine, he told the 2012 European Society for Medical Oncology.

Phase II of the study is planned and will be aimed at patients for whom a first or second treatment strategy lost effectiveness and where the vaccine is a further option.
