Tehran : Iranian trade unions Thursday agreed to reopen Tehran’s grand bazaar a day after a series of protests led to closure of shops and business centres.
Riot police were deployed Wednesday in the centre of Tehran after some protesters tried to incite unrest and disorder in Tehran’s currency exchange district and grand bazaar as the country’s currency market was destabilised recently, Xinhua reported.
Police clashed with illegal currency exchangers and protesters in Ferdowsi district and detained a lot of them, a witness said.
According to semi-official Mehr news agency, the chiefs of Iranian trade unions, including producers, distributors and technical service unions, agreed in a Thursday meeting to reopen Tehran’s bazaar from Saturday in the attendance of security forces.
The union leaders blamed the problems in their business and deals to be the result of the government’s performance in the economic sector.
They also blamed the government for causing “destructive effect ” on the country’s economy with its “wrong decisions,” the report said.
On Tuesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the West has launched an “economic battle” against the Islamic republic.
