The Kegalle High Court judge convicted Shanmugalingum Sooriyakumar alias Suri on four counts including aiding a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber to move from the then rebel heartland of Kilinochchi to Welliweriya town from where she is believed to have travelled to Colombo for the purpose of assassinating Fonseka.

The female suicide bomber made the attempt on Fonseka outside the army headquarters on April 25, 2006.

Fonseka was seriously injured in the attack, and nine others were killed.

He was rushed first to the military hospital at Army Headquarters, transferred to the Colombo General Hospital and later flown to Singapore for medical treatment.

After recovering from his injuries, he resumed his duties in July 2006.

Three other Tamil Tigers have also been indicted over the attempted assassination and are awaiting trial.
