The chief minister told reporters that the people behind the whole communal flare-up would be severely punished. “Everyone knows who are responsible for the clashes,” Yadav added.

His father and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Sunday said the riots were part of a very “large conspiracy”.

The party’s state unit has also alleged conspiracy behind the riots. Opposition parties have slammed the state government of failing to maintain law and order and are questioning the seven-month-old Akhilesh Yadav government’s ability to maintain communal harmony.

“If the government knows everything, who is stopping it from naming the people behind the clashes?” asked Vijay Pathak, state spokeperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He added that the fact that curfew has imposed for several days after communal disruptions in Kosi, Bareilly and Faizabad is a pointer that the state administration was not up to the mark.

Nine people, including two policemen, were injured in violence that broke out during the immersion of Durga idols in Faizabad and Barabanki areas Oct 24.
