Shimla: Two people have died in Himachal Pradesh of scrub typhus, a disease caused by the bite of an infected mite, an official said here Tuesday. With these deaths, the toll in the state due to the disease increased to three this year.
“Two people died in the past two days and 30 people have been tested positive for the disease,” K.S. Rana, edical superintendent of Shimla’s Indira Gandhi Medical Collage and Hospital, told IANS.
He said one of the victims belonged to Chopal area in the interiors of Shimla district, while another belonged to Hamirpur town.
Shimla, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur are the worst scrub typhus-affected districts. In the last three years, more than 60 people have died of it in the state, health officials said.
Its symptoms are fever, headache, muscle pain, cough and gastroenteritis — inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines.
