New Delhi : Despite continuing protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over coal block allocations, the Rajya Sabha Tuesday passed a bill to set up more AIIMS-like institutes in the states.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012, replaces an ordinance which allowed the six AIIMS-like institutes to become operational from Sep 15.
The bill also gives the central government authority to establish more AIIMS-like institutes.
When the Rajya Sabha met at 4 p.m. after three adjournments, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, who was presiding, passed the bill for AIIMS-like institutes and then adjourned the house for the day.
The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha Thursday and was sent to the Rajya Sabha for approval.
Parliament’s monsoon session is set to end Sep 7. This session has so far seen ten successive working days lost because of the BJP’s protests.
