Gurgaon : Britain-based Bourn Hall Clinic, responsible for the world’s first test-tube baby in 1978, Friday opened its second hi-tech infertility treatment facility in India and announced that it will open 20 such centres in the country by 2016 investing some $50 million (Rs.275 crore).
Bourn Hall is the world’s first in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) clinic. It had opened its first clinic in India at Kochi last April.
According to a statement released after the formal opening of the new clinic in Gurgaon, Bourn Hall said it targets to open nearly 20 infertility treatment facilities by 2016 with an investment of around $50 million.
Pravin Kini, chief executive officer (India), said the Gurgaon centre has some advance features that are maintained by high-tech IVF laboratories.
“It has a Clean Room IVF lab that is extremely complex and is forward-compliant with the EU Tissue Directive (sets standards of quality and safety for the procurement, preservation and distribution of human tissues and cells) and the upcoming USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) guidelines for future IVF labs,” he said.
According to Bourn Hall Clinic, over 45 lakh couples worldwide have so far benefited from the IVF techniques (also called test-tube baby) pioneered by its founders.
Bourn Hall Clinic has directly assisted in the birth of 10,000 test-tube babies over the last 32 years.
Peter Brinsden, global medical director of Bourn Hall, said the Clinic’s entire technical staff, which include the doctors, scientists (embryologist) and nurses, are trained in Britain.
“They all follow the standard operating procedures of Bourn Hall Clinic, besides the technical protocol which has also made us famous,” he said.
