Taj city lashed by heavy showers

Agra : Ending a spell of hot and humid weather of the past few days, heavy showers Monday afternoon brought cheer and turned conditions pleasant for visitors at the Taj Mahal, even as Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav paid a visit to the shrine of Sheikh Salim Chisti, officials said.

The city was reeling under high humid conditions at 70 percent for the last few days, with temperature ranging between 25-32 degrees Celsius, an official said.

“The sharp showers took us by surprise. We were feeling so uncomfortable since morning due to heat, sweating profusely, but now it’s all so green and wonderful,” said Shankaran from Coimbatore who had come with his family to see the Taj Mahal.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has brought rain to Agra, said farmer Ravi Singh of Barauli Ahir block. The showers are good for the bajra crop, Ravi added. Yadav was on a visit here to pray at the shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti at Fatehpur Sikri.

The showers lasted an hour, flooding road crossings and leading to usual traffic snarls. The weather office has forcast more rain for Agra region Tuesday.
