New Delhi : A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.1 lakh on him for possessing over 162 kg of poppy straw, said a court order made available Friday.
Additional Sessions Judge M.K. Nagpal, in an order passed Wednesday, awarded the sentence to Jagjeet Singh.
He was arrested Dec 21, 2009, at Badarpur border. The police recovered four bags containing 162 kg of chura post (poppy straw) from his vehicle. Police told the court that his accomplice escaped and was untraceable.
“The quantity of poppy straw is a huge quantity of the contraband substance as a quantity of 50 kg of poppy straw has been prescribed as a commercial quantity,” the court said.
The court said the convict was only acting as a carrier of the contraband and was not alleged to be the kingpin of any drugs syndicate.
The convict told police that his associate Sunil, who had absconded, had promised to pay him Rs.7,000 for delivering in Punjab the contraband, which was brought from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
