Kolkata : Threatened by relatives for marrying outside their religions, a man and his wife from the city Tuesday approached the West Bengal Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention.

The two, in their 20s, married last month against the wishes of their families. The two have been on the run after the woman’s family threatened to kill them.

“My only fault is that I married her. Since our marriage in August, we have been attacked several times and are constantly threatened. Despite several complaints, police have not done anything so far,” said the man, who did not wish to be named, after meeting the commission officials.

Commission Chairman Justice (retd) Asok Kumar Ganguly, who met the couple, assured action against the guilty.

“He has assured me that suitable action will be taken against those who are threatening us. He gave the necessary orders to police officers,” said the man.

Expressing concern over the issue, Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) – a civil rights organisation – said the administration should take steps to check the menace of honour killing.

“It is surely a case for concern… the administration should ensure the state is free from such fanatical beliefs,” said APDR member Ranjit Sur.

West Bengal, which hitherto had been largely alien to the concept of honour killing, Monday woke up to the horrific death of Mampi Ghosh, a minor school girl, who was allegedly killed in Nadia district by her own family over her affair with a boy.
