New Delhi : Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik Monday said a workshop on sign language for MPs and policy makers should be conducted to make them aware about the need of the deaf.
“The National Association of Deaf (NAD) should conduct seminars and workshops. Maybe in the month of December with the ministry’s full support, an awareness workshop on sign language for ministers, MPs and policy makers can be arranged,” Wasnik said at an event marking the ’55th International Week of the Deaf’ here.
The minister added that his ministry was looking forward to the new disability law, which was compliant with the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
According to the NAD, India has about 17 million deaf people.
“The quality of education provided to deaf in schools is poor and the teachers should be trained in sign language, so that education can be imparted to the deaf students in the best way possible,” a statement from NAD said.
