“The bullet-riddled body of Girish Sohesh was found in the wee hours of Friday. Though a few Maoist posters were found lying nearby, we are yet to ascertain whether Maoists were involved in the killing,” Superintendent of Police, Jhargram police district Bharati Ghosh told IANS.

While some reports suggested that the victim was a Trinamool Congress worker, Ghosh denied this.

“There is nothing to suggest that Soresh belonged to any political party,” added Ghosh.

The incident happened in Bandhghora village in Jhargram, some 175 km from Kolkata.

This is the first incident of an alleged Maoist killing in the state after the death of top rebel leader Kishenji alias Koteshwar Rao who was killed by security forces in November last year.

The last person to be killed in Maoist violence was Jharkhand Andolan Samanway Mancha leader Babu Bose, who was allegedly shot dead by rebels in September 2011, also in Jhargram.
