New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) has urged the European Union to reconsider its decision of lifting trade and economic sanctions against Myanmar. In a letter to EU ambassador to New Delhi, JUH general secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani, while expressing shock and concern maintained that the decision contradicts the very foundation set the EU, in the light of Human Rights Watch report which accuses authorities of complicity in the mass killing of Muslims in the west of the country.
“The announcement is coincided with horrific ethnic cleansing targeted against Muslim community aimed at driving them away from Myanmar. Extremist Buddhist mobs are free to kill minority and stalk the streets to torch their houses, shops and other properties, thereby the UN itself has declared the Rohangiya Muslims as most persecuted community on the planet. According To UN Report the military, police and other civilian law enforcement forces were found standing by while atrocities have been committed.”
Rubbishing the notion felt by The EU that the decision was in response to the progress in the region, he exerted that nothing has changed and progressed inMyanmar. “The same human rights crisis created by the former army rulers continues unabated in a full fledged way during this quasi-civilian government led by Mr. Then Sen.”
“In this state of condition it looks beyond reason that instead of warning the Then Sein govt against alleged complicity in the crime, it has been encouraged with lifting ban. We are unable to understand on what basis this decision has been made? What progress and change has the EU have had to respond to? Maulana Madani questioned in his letter to H.E. Mr. João Cravinho Head of Delegation of the European Union in New Delhi.

Subject: An appeal to reconsider lifting sanctions against Myanmar amid state sponsored ethnic cleansing in the region.
Your Excellency,
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on behalf of Indian Muslims expresses deep concern over moves taken by the European Union with regard to lifting trade and economic sanctions against Myanmar, despite a Human Rights Watch report which accuses authorities of complicity in the mass killing of Muslims in the west of the country.
We feel shocked by this announcement which is coincided with horrific ethnic cleansing targeted against Muslim community aimed at driving them away from Myanmar. Extremist Buddhist mobs are free to kill minority and stalk the streets to torch their houses, shops and other properties, thereby the UN itself has declared the Rohangiya Muslims as most persecuted community on the planet. According To UN Report the military, police and other civilian law enforcement forces were found standing by while atrocities have been committed. We believe that human rights crisis created by the former army rulers continues unabated in a full fledged way during this quasi-civilian government led by Mr. Then Sen. The Myanmar Government has failed its duty to protect life and property of its citizens.
In this state of condition it looks beyond reason that instead of warning the Then Sein govt against alleged complicity in the crime, it has been encouraged with lifting ban. We are unable to understand on what basis this decision has been made? What progress and change has the EU have had to respond to?
Therefore, on humanitarian ground we urge the EU to consider its decision responding to its responsibility towards humanity. Kindly influence upon the govt of Myanmar to provide relief and rehabilitation to those who have been uprooted along with all citizenship rights.
With regards,
Yours sincerely,
(Maulana) M. A. Madani
General Secretary JUH
