New Delhi : Defence Minister A.K. Antony Wednesday briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir where five soldiers were killed in an ambush the day before.
Antony told the prime minister about the situation and readiness of Army to protect the sanctity of LoC, sources said.
The defence minister Tuesday told parliament “The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily armed terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan Army uniform.”
The statement created a controversy with the opposition accusing him of giving an escape route to Pakistan.
A defence ministry statement — which was withdrawn later — had stated that the ambush was carried out by Pakistan’s Border Action Team and had also said that the Pakistan army was involved.
Border Action Team comprises regulars of Pakistan army and militants.
Antony has said his Tuesday’s statement was based on information available at that time and he would come back to parliament after an update from Army chief Gen Bikram Singh who visited Jammu region a day after the incident.
