Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday urged India’s younger generation to use the internet to communicate and unite against the Congress-led “anti-people government” at the centre.
“Time has come to prevent the country from getting sold and only students and the younger generation can do that. I would urge all of you to use the internet and communicate to create a united voice of protest across the country,” Banerjee said here.
The Trinamool Congress supremo who has been actively criticising the United Progressive Alliance’s economic policies on a social networking site, asked students to use Facebook, emails and other networking media to build a strong voice of protest against the central government.
Addressing a rally on the occasion of the foundation day of the students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress, Banerjee asked students to pursue the politics of development and refrain from indulging in violence or destruction.
With her government deciding to resume the students’ election, Banerjee also cautioned them against falling prey to provocation.
“We had suspended the students’ union elections because of the panchayat (rural) polls. But they will be resumed now. The rival unions would provoke you, they will attack you, but I would urge you not to fall prey to their provocation. Be cool and do not resort to violence,” said Banerjee.
She also said the students’ union elections, likely to begin from October, would be conducted in a phased manner with one university going to the polls at a time.
Students’ union elections in the state were indefinitely suspended earlier this year following the killing of a policeman during the nominations filing process outside a city college.
Observing that “all politicians were not bad”, Banerjee urged students to join politics and serve the country.
